Department of English Education
The Department of English Education was established in April 2013 with support from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Global Human Resource Development Project. Since then, we have developed a distinct style of communicative classes that integrate the four skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing in order to improve students’ communication abilities. The classes are held twice a week to help students acquire basic communication skills in English. In addition, the School of Medical Sciences operates an integrated English education program, covering General and Specialized Education, with the aim of equipping students with English communication ability that can be used in clinical settings. Meanwhile, the School of Global and Community Studies, launched in April 2016, offers intensive English language education in the first year in order to develop students’ communication skills essential for study abroad. In so doing, it aims to provide students with English language skills that can be used in international business environments.
In addition, in the Department of English Education, after consulting with the School of Engineering and Education about the need for English for Specific Purposes (ESP) education to improve English proficiency in specialized fields, we are working to improve the English language program in General Education, setting as our near-future objectives the provision of education to raise TOEIC scores for entry to master’s programs and employment opportunities. Similarly, for students in the School of Education, we strive to give students the confidence to teach English in front of children during their teaching practice and future careers as elementary and junior-high-school teachers.
English is a communication tool that enables students to play an active role in a global society while making the most of their specialized skills and knowledge. We are moving from an era in which speaking English was considered to be a way to better enjoy overseas trips in safety and to make friends around the world, to one in which it is an essential tool for work and communication. Please take advantage of the multiple diverse ways provided by the university to acquire this ability.
Message from the Director
Department of Japanese Language Education
The Department of Japanese Language Education offers Japanese language learning opportunities to all international students enrolled at the University of Fukui. We provide five levels, from introductory and beginner to advanced, with each level having classes focused on reading and writing, and classes focused on listening and speaking. We carefully advise international students on course selection, listening to their preferences, so they can study in the class most suitable for them.
In addition to Japanese language classes, we operate classes for international students such as “Japanese Affairs,” “Japanese Culture,” and “Project Work for International Students”. For example, in “Japanese Culture,” we offer lectures and hands-on experiences not only in traditional Japanese culture like tea ceremony and kimono, but also to help students understand Fukui’s local culture. Furthermore, “Project Work for International Students” aims to cultivate comprehensive Japanese language proficiency through interaction with local Japanese people and collaborative learning among students. Through considering challenges facing society, students aim to improve their communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and information dissemination skills.
Outside the classroom, we provide advice to U-PASS (University Peer Academic Support Services) to support international students’ Japanese language learning. U-PASS has Tutors, primarily Japanese students, who provide one-on-one Japanese learning support to international students. This activity should be a valuable opportunity for all students to re-examine their own language.
Furthermore, we offer opportunities to learn about ways to support Japanese language learning to those who are providing Japanese language learning support for foreign residents in the community. We plan and hold public lectures and various study sessions, and we hope many people will participate.
